Our energy is our power.
When we have energy blocks we do not have full access to all our power.
Dissipating our energy or binding it in negativity renders us powerless.
Creation of Energy Blocks
To cope with stress we tend to increase, decrease or freeze our energy. An increase or excess of energy to cope shows up as a pattern of overcompensation for fear or weakness. Individuals who dominate situations and people demonstrate this. On the surface this may look like a powerful approach. It is not! Internally the excessive energy required to accomplish this behavioral style becomes stagnate and creates health problems in the area of the body where the excess has accumulated.
A decrease in energy or a freezing response is manifested in withdrawal in order to avoid conflict or challenge. This deficient energy state results in a feeling of being unable to cope. it can also manifest in not feeling you have what it takes to work through situations. Understandably retreat is chosen. This often has the consequence of reinforcing the original state and the person experiences even more of a sense of emptiness, restriction, and uselessness.
Identifying Energy Blocks
How can we begin to become aware of how we are managing our subtle energy? Our bodies and habits give us clues. Feelings and behavior also give clues re: how we are managing energy. The shape our body takes and how we carry ourselves also give hints as to how we are managing energy.
Observe how you carry your body. How do you stand, sit and walk? Do you stand tall or do you hunch over or inward? Do you breathe deep from your belly or shallow from the top of your lungs? Just observing begins to connect you to what is going on in unconsciously and gives you the basis for shifting your personal power toward the positive.
It may feel daunting at first to begin to see yourself and others through the eyes of energy. However it is a wonderful way to learn more about yourself, relationships and how you can positively influence your health, life and relationships. This broader/deeper awareness gives us new and often more efficient ways to effect change. Energy systems are highly responsive to change. Conscious access and management opens the door to a wide variety of options for transformation. This is truly preventative action.
A Simple First Step to Work with Energy Blocks
One way to strengthen your energy system is to pay attention to your breathing. Tune in and notice how you breathe. Do you breathe fast or slow? Shallow or deep? Long breaths or short? Stop reading and take a long deep breath right now. Breathe deeply and slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth. Pause very briefly at the top of the inhale then exhale slowly and completely. Do this two more times. Do you notice a shift in how you feel? This is an excellent technique to use whenever you are feeling stressed or fearful, tired or depleted. On a more preventative level, adopting a new pattern of deep, easy and full breathing will help improve energy and more clear, balanced feelings.
Emotional Freedom Technique is a wonderful way to work with blocked energy. A trained facilitator can guide you through this technique in person or over the telephone if doing it alone does not work for you.
Guided Imagery, Chakra Balancing, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Healing Touch are all methods that can help release energy block.
Holistic Therapy addresses all levels of energy…mental, physical, emotional and spiritual energy.
Meditation is very helpful in both identifying blocks and in developing the subtle competency to release blocked, stuck or stagnant energy.
As with anything it is important to work with methods that feel comfortable to you. Also remember that different methods may work at different times in your process. Having a full toolbox of methods is preferable.
