Inner peace requires new learning. We cannot simply wish for a quieter mind. We must recondition its natural tendencies to open to our higher mind where true freedom, peace and happiness live!
The mind is a great servant but a terrible master to paraphrase Robin Sharma. Our minds are always working. The busy part of our mind does seem to believe that it has a job to protect us from danger. The problem is that this is not true AND it doesn’t work!
So how can we shift from the tyranny of our lower mind to one of inner peace and ease…the province of our higher mind?
Inner Peace can Begin with Simple Intentional Breathing
A really simple way to begin to walk on a new path with your inner being is to tune into your breath and use it to jumpstart a new inner reality. You have to breath anyway, it is always with you and it does not cost a dime! Proper, relaxed breathing is a cornerstone in any inner awareness process.
Start now with a clear, deep breath. Sit in a comfortable position and as straight as you can. Take one long, slow deep breath. Bring your breath into you abdomen as deep as you can. Then slowly let it out. Try it again. This time, as you breathe in, FEEL breathing in peace and joy. Hold it for a comfortable pause. As you breathe out, intentionally feel breathing out all negativity, anger, stress and thoughts of the day. Continue for a few cycles.
It is pretty much guaranteed if you allow yourself this simple practice several times a day that you will at some point begin to a new ease building. You may find it easier to let go of fear and worry. You may find overall you are less anxious. You may even begin to catch a glimmer of happiness bubbling up from deep inside.
If you were to couple this practice with a deep relaxation such as on our recording Relaxation 101 you would definitely notice all these things, more frequently and at a deeper level.
Practice for Inner Peace
To learn how to be in the present moment more often, practice the breathing exercise 3-5 times a day every day for 21 days. When you begin a new practice, it becomes a habit after 3 weeks of dedicated practice.
Whenever you find yourself in a tense or nervous state, try simple deep breathing. The beauty of it is that you can do it anywhere and you can do it without drawing attention to yourself. You can practice it at work or at home. You can practice it while you are out walking or enjoying nature. Practice it at different times and in different locations and note how you feel.
Pay attention to how your energy shifts; you will probably notice more vitality, ease and inner peace and less tension, stress and reactivity. As your energy begins to unblock, straighten out and flow more coherently, your mood, feelings, mind and body all naturally flow along into a healthier, more relaxed and pleasant state of being.
