We are hardwired to to look out for danger. Our fight/flight/freeze reaction is meant to keep us safe, to protect us. However it can wreak havoc when uncertainty or confusion abounds.
Being clear regarding what we can control and what we cannot helps to set the stage for applying appropriate coping skills. For those things we can control we can have an action plan for each aspect. For those things we cannot do anything about externally, we must engage “inner technologies”
Self awareness is necessary to be able to identify what is happening in our minds/emotions.
Are you feeling an increase in frustration?
Are you irritable, angry feeling powerless or sad ?
If you were already struggling then our current situation can make that worse.
Here are some tips to maintain sanity:
Separate what you can control and what you cannot.
Do what you can with the things you can control.
Remember this is “for now” and it may be long but it is not for the rest of your life!
Employ techniques like relaxation, meditation, EFT (emotional freedom technique), breathwork, guided imagery to build inner resilience and release stress.
What helps you to feel safe? DO a lot of that!
Exercise: walk, jog, yoga, check out YouTube for something that appeals to you
Use mindfulness to help you stay in the present and not catastrophize about the future.
Use the internet with discernment. Limit engagement with things that ramp up your nervous system. Used positively you can reach out and connect with family and friends online, on social media, or online forums. Join an online support group.
