Pleasure Deficits: What You Need to Know About the Sacral Chakra

Pleasure Deficits and Awareness
We are hardwired for pleasure and in fact need it for optimal health. So why do so many of us lack enough pleasure in our lives? There are many reasons: the pace of life, the need to keep up, accomplish, achieve, and to SURVIVE!

As I think about the question it seems that there is another reason for so many of us to have pleasure deficits: the voice in our head! This may be the biggest obstacle for many of us  to not experience more of the goodness of life. I know in my upbringing my family, ethnicity and religion all had strong negative messages about pleasure.

What do the voices in YOUR head say about your need, even right, to have pleasure? Do they tell you you don’t deserve it, or that you would be lazy to take the time, or it’s hedonistic/bad/shameful? Something else?

The Roots of Pleasure Deficits  are In the Sacral Chakra
It is not just our brain that tells a story about pleasure. From an energetic perspective everything happens within the energy system first and then register in the body-mind. This is one reason why energy approaches can be so helpful.
Here is some information about the sacral chakra taken from my book Fully Human, Fully Alive, Embodying the Wisdom of the Chakras that may help you identify some of the blocks you may have regarding pleasure.

Fun Facts that Set the Stage for Pleasure Deficits
The sacral chakra is located in the pelvis approximately three finger-widths below the navel and develops between 3 and 8 years of age. The second chakra is the seat of our emotions and it helps regulate the flow and distribution of
our energy.
Physically the sacral chakra is associated with the health of the reproductive organs and hips. It also governs the body’s liquids; for example, blood, lymph, mucus, saliva.
The sacral chakra ’s element is water. As we think about the qualities of water we can get a felt sense of how second chakra energy functions in our  lives. In nature we can easily see examples of the power and attributes of water. Water can be smooth and flowing as in a river stream; it can pack the power of ocean waves crashing on the shore;
it can be stagnant, as a pond that receives no fresh and cleansing input. Water can be as refreshing as a mountain lake, cold as the frozen tundra, or volatile as steam exploding from a too-tight container. Water can be refreshing, life giving, and life enhancing.
Too much or too little water can be a problem, as can stagnation, or the lack of containment. These can be harmful
or destructive and so it is with the emotional power of the second chakra.

Positive Expression of Sacral Chakra Energy
The sacral chakra has been described as a dark interior cave where all manner of demons lie as it does hold a lot of our most challenging shadow material. But this energy center is also the womb of creation. It is a place where new life gathers its power and is gestated until it is ripe and ready to be birthed into the world. So this is a complex and powerful seat of being for us.
